From late July to early
November the waters of Hervey Bay buzz come alive with activity when
visitors travel from around the world to witness the annual migration of
the majestic humpback whales.
|
Each winter the mighty humpback whales migrate north to escape
the frozen waters of the Antarctic, stopping along the way to
play in the calm waters of Hervey Bay with their calves. |
 |
The humpback whales are
amongst the most revered animals on earth, the enormous mammals just as
inquisitive about humans as we are about them. The fifth largest
whale species, the humpback whales can grow up to 15 meters in length
and weigh up to 40 tonnes.
Join one of the many
whale watching cruises and witness the stunning creatures teach their
young how to tail slap, lunge, breach and spy hop, just meters from the
boat.
|
The sheltered waters of Hervey Bay are not only home to the
humpback whales but also to other marine life such as dolphins,
turtles and dugongs which are spotted regularly. |
 |
Numerous cruise
operators offer half day and three quarter day cruises which depart the
Urangan Boat Harbour in Hervey Bay daily throughout the whale watching
season. Each cruise is accompanied by professional and
knowledgeable crew who offer expert commentary and local experience.
|
Whale watching season runs from
late July to early November each year, and Hervey Bay is
considered to be the Whale Watching Capital of Australia, the
perfect location to view these majestic creatures. |
 |
Sheltered by World Heritage Fraser Island, the protected waters of
Hervey Bay are the ideal location for a safe, calm and relaxed whale
watching experience. Join the celebrations and visit Hervey Bay at
the beginning of the season when the annual Whale Watching Festival is
held. The festival is a week long celebration in honour of the
humpback whales with various activities happening around the city, such
as an aquatic carnival, the Blessing of the Fleet and the light parade.
